Increasing numbers of visitors

It has been a busy season for our tour operators in Destination Arctic Circle with the number of passengers over the summer season increasing by over nine percent from last year.

At the same time, our destination is experiencing increasing numbers of cruise ships unlike many other destinations in the world. This has also helped our destination to expand the range of products we can offer our visitors.

Direct flight from Iceland and more departures over the high season

DAC has been working hard to establish a direct flight route between Iceland and Kangerlussuaq and finally this has been accomplished! Air Iceland starts a new route summer 2016 by flying directly from Keflavik to Kangerlussuaq twice a week.

This opens new possibilities up for our local tour operators who are already planning the next summer season with products you will not be able to find in any other destination. Along with this, Air Greenland will double the number of flights from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq over the summer period.

Positive reaction from agents visiting DAC

Agents visiting DAC for the first time, are all astounded by its nature and wildlife, along with the quality of products they can offer to their clients today. For those agents visiting DAC for the second time, all agreed that the development of this area has been fast and targeted. The destination has accomplished this in close collaboration with Visit Greenland and tour operators.

For example, DAC organised a VNTM Post tour for agents where they had the chance to either sleep on the ice cap with WOGAC or camp in the backcountry with Greenland Outdoors. This tour had a “wow” affect on these tough critics, and also some good feedback to be incorporated into the products for next time. Both operators are receiving more requests and clients from both individuals and groups.

Camp Ice cap

“It is a real experience to spend the night on the Ice Cap... not only to walk on the ice but also to spend the night on the symbolic Greenland Ice Sheet. The equipment was good and the guide very professional. Kim takes time to explain about the security & help with the equipment.”

Camping in the backcountry

It was such a pleasure to explore the backcountry with Jens. He knows a lot, he is real and his guests receive an authentic experience.

There are a few things what he can improve: I found it great that he could cook at the stone but I think especially in colder temperatures it would be necessary to have a group or kitchen tent, so people have a possibility to find shelter in the wind and cold and where he can tell his great stories about hunting, the musk oxen and so on. Overall for me this however was the best trip.

With a new ATV-Track, Qeqqata Kommunia schedules to begin constructing the track summer 2016, will connect Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut.

Future DAC – New products

DAC´s next goal is to be “Hiking Destination No.1” in Greenland. Nowhere else in Greenland you will find larger areas for hiking from the coastal line to the ice cap.

With a new ATV-Track, Qeqqata Kommunia schedules to begin constructing the track summer 2016, will connect Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut. This easier access to our hinterland will also open new experiences up for both individuals and groups in order to explore areas that has never before been accessible.
