Game of Thrones star launches Google Street View in South Greenland

It was with a touch of star power that the second batch of images from Greenland was released on Google Street View this month. The ‘kingslayer’ Jamie Lannister from Game of Thrones might prefer the hot and dusty Kings Landing, but actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau calls the dramatically cooler Greenland his family’s second home. Coster-Waldau was therefore willing to pull on some trekking pants and spend a few days documenting Greenland’s terrain for Google Street View.

“Hopefully the Google Tracker will help shorten the distance around the world”, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

This partnership was a win-win-win situation for all stakeholders.

  • For Nikolaj, who is a recently appointed U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, this project allowed him to help put his fame to a good and personal cause by highlighting climate change in a magnificent country he is dearly connected to through his wife.

  • For Google, it is the first time that a celebrity has participated in the Google Street View project, thereby creating fresh buzz for the online initiative.

  • For the local Greenlandic stakeholders such as Asiaq Greenland Survey, Air Greenland and Visit Greenland, a number of goals were achieved. First of all, it is a fun and visual way to get Greenland literally on the map for the masses. With the star element of Coster-Waldau added into this mix, however, the project was able to create publicity and gain the attention of big and valuable media such as The GuardianTravel and LeisureMashable and Business Insider.

Did you know?

A big chunk of Greenland can be likened to the Game of Thrones' icy terrains known as 'beyond the wall,' but Igaliku and a lot of South Greenland is surprisingly green during the summer. A bit like The Reach in Game of Thrones!

The material gathered is already available on Google Street View, but will soon be integrated on Visit Greenland’s website on relevant destination pages.

Partners from this project include: Google, Visit Greenland, Destination South Greenland, Asiaq and Air Greenland, Lonely Leap, Cocreators Films and snowflake.gl.
