The Port Readiness Program has been compiled to inform cruise destinations about the opportunities for local revenue, higher employment and planning of tours in relation to the development of the industry.

The main purpose of the Port Readiness Program is to offer tools on all levels of planning thus helping the local communities to become more attentive and proactive when it comes to a targeted local development in order to better provide a service to the cruise industry.

The sustainability of the business in Greenland is subject to the condition that the destinations fulfill the needs and expectations of the cruise companies and their passengers as well as the destinations delivering services and infrastructure of a sufficient quality.

Continued growth

Continued growth within the cruise industry of Greenland will depend on the ability of the available destinations to deliver quality products, experiences and infrastructure for the travelers and thereby meeting the market needs.

The sustainability is also dependent on the protection and nurturing of the unique natural and cultural heritage on the cruise destinations.

Goals

An important element of the Port Readiness project is the development of a Port Readiness manual. This manual will be developed with local stakeholders in mind helping them gain a better understanding of the cruise industry, and how they might actively take part in this growing sector. The manual will specifically provide:   

  • information on the cruise industry
  • information on how to develop the cruise industry
  • a step by step guide to hosting cruise ships

The manual will serve as a practical tool to all interested in the cruise tourism on a given destination. It will help to identify priorities when it comes to improving the physical infrastructure, higher employment, planning tours and potential partnerships with the cruise industry.

Describing practical tools and activities, surveys and offering examples of ‘best practice’ the manual will provide the reader with checklists for when the cruise ships arrive.

Increasing local awareness

Last but not least it will give the users the necessary tools to increase local awareness on cruise tourism just as it tells of the opportunities to plan and develop the cruise tourism in one’s local area.

Who Should Make Use of This Manual

All stakeholders within the cruise industry can make use of this manual in regards to planning and providing products and services to the cruise industry. It is intended for organizations, municipals and businesses in the private sector that either arrange visits from cruise ships or provide products and services to the cruise ships.

These stakeholders include:

  • local cruise comittees
  • municipal councils / settlement councils
  • port authorities / technical administration
  • tour operators / associations
  • retailers / hotels / restaurants
  • tourist operators / incoming agencies
  • church

In 2015 Port Readiness meetings were held in Maniitsoq and Kangaamiut respectively.

Upernavik and Uummannaq are next and the courses will take place in February.

Visit Greenland will host Port Readiness seminars in cooperation with the regions, i.e. the Municipal Administration or business counsils on the expressed interest from local operators.
